  • There were 61 officially recognized cantonments in India as of 2019, totaling 157,000 acres (640 km²). The distribution of these was as follows: The Central Command had twenty-five, the Southern Command had nineteen, the Western Command had thirteen, the Eastern Command had four, and the Northern Command had one.

 

  • 21 troops, many of whom showed exceptional bravery in the face of hostile forces, have received the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military distinction for valor.

 

  • During the floods in Uttarakhand in 2013, the Indian Army carried out one of the biggest civilian rescue missions, Operation Rahat.
  • The Indian Army is credited with building the tallest bridge in the world. The Bailey Bridge, which spans the Dras and Suru rivers amid the untamed Himalayan mountains, is located in the Ladakh valley. The Indian Army finished this feat of engineering in August 1982.

They defended a fort against a vast Pakistani army with a single M40 recoilless weapon placed on a jeep. There were about 2,000 enemy soldiers, backed by a mobile infantry brigade and forty-five tanks. The Indian soldiers resisted all night long despite being greatly outnumbered. They were able to decisively beat the Pakistani forces with the Indian Air Force's vital air help.
