As August comes around every year, there's a certain buzz in the air. Afra, white, and green cloth cover the streets. Cultural programs are being practiced in schools, shops are putting up little paper flags in their windows, and patriotic songs can be heard everywhere.
This year we mark 79th Independence Day of India. It's a time to remember our country's history and be proud of where it is now. This year's celebrations are centered around the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, which is making every home a sign of unity and patriotism.
India finally got its freedom on August 15, 1947, after being a colony for almost 200 years. Not only was there a change in politics, but decades of sacrifices, struggles, and dreams paid off. Our history is full of brave people, from Mahatma Gandhi's call for nonviolence to Subhas Chandra Bose's spirit of resistance.
India Independence Day is a time every year to remember these sacrifices. We stop what we're doing to raise the flag, sing the national anthem, and remember how hard we worked for our freedom and how important it is to protect it.
Formed as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the began in 2022. Its goal is simple but strong: to get every citizen to raise the Tiranga at home from August 13th to 15th and share their experience online.
Har Ghar Tiranga campaign
The idea is to make the national flag a personal, everyday sign of pride. It used to only be seen in government buildings and offices. It means, "The flag is mine, my family, and my home. It's not just for official events."
While the essence of the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign remains the same, 2025 brings exciting updates:
The campaign follows the Flag Code of India, 2002, which was amended in 2022 to allow the national flag to be flown both day and night. Here are some key points:
By following these guidelines, we ensure that our participation is not just enthusiastic but also respectful.
Becoming a part of the campaign is simple:
The whole process takes just a few minutes, but the sense of pride lasts far longer.
This campaign is not about ticking a box; it’s about making it personal on the occasion of Independence Day of India. Here’s how you can join in creatively:
Patriotism does not have an address. Indians overseas have commemorated Independence Day on 15 August Independence Day in past years with flag hoistings at such global landmarks as Times Square, Eiffel Tower, Sydney Opera House and Petronas Twin Towers. The Indian government is keeping a very active role in propelling the embassies as well as cultural associations to assist NRIs to join in, which makes this year a genuine global celebration.
We all live together in a country as diverse as ours and unity is our strength- and sometimes it just requires reminding. Beyond sufficiency of cloth and color, the Tiranga is also that story of struggle, the Tiranga is also our story of triumph and it is our story of tomorrow. Our lives today are ever more digital, and more so, individualistic, and the campaign is the opportunity to be collectively able to do something as one, out in the open, with pride, and with exuberance of 1.4 billion people. It is a celebration that makes Happy Independence Day sound so good to say.
On this India Independence Day people, I pledge this: that instead of merely reflecting on our freedom fighters, we instead respect them in our own actions. Har Ghar Tiranga campaign is not just a token initiative; it sends a message of the fact that patriotism begins at home. That is your invitation, then, hoist the Tiranga, take a photo, enter your presence and inspire others to participate. Since we are not going to say Happy Independence Day, this 15 August Independence Day, simply - It will be our lifetime, We will live under our Tiranga.
As we look up at the tricolour we fly so proudly in the sky, we should once again recall the fact that we did not receive our freedom as a gift, we fought hard to get it with sacrifices, heart, and sheer unity of purpose. It is about evoking the feeling of unity and remembering that every house is a symbol of the heartbeat of India. We do not say Jai Hind when we simply say words, we complete our deal by promising to protect, respect and nurture our nation which our forefathers dreamt of.
Therefore this time around, be it on the street with the revelers or even up your own house lifting your Happy Independence Day wishes, do it with pride, love and an unhindered belief in the greatness of our country. May the flag of India Independence Day not only fly over our brick and mortar structures, but fly forever in our hearts.
