As the curtains fall over the IPL 2025 mega auction. Record-breaking bids and some surprise picks, the auction had it all.

A total of ₹639.15 crore were spent on 182 players over two days of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction that culminated in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Monday.

We saw teams like LSG and PBKS flex their financial might and rope in the big names. Other teams like Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals had to wait for their moments.

Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer emerged as top three buys at the auction on the opening day itself.

Rishabh Pant became the costliest player in the history of the IPL auction as Lucknow spent a whopping 27 crores on him. He was closely followed by Shreyas Iyer, who went to Punjab for 26.75 crores. In what a big surprise in the auction, Venkatesh Iyer went back to Kolkata after they had a major bidding war with Bengaluru for his services. He was ultimately sold for 23.75 crore.

The second day of IPL auction belonged to bowlers with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar and Bengal duo of Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep being the mega gainers. While Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) got Bhuvneshwar for a whopping ₹10 crore, Chahar found himself in the middle of a three-way battle between Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings.

Eventually, Chahar went to Mumbai for ₹9.25 crore. Mukesh and Akash, who are in Australia currently with the Indian team for Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), too had a great day at the auction, bothing going for ₹8 crores each. While Delhi Capitals used RTM to secure Mukesh's services back, Akash Deep went to Lucknow Super Giants.

Among other top earners of IPL auction 2025, Marco Jansen and Tushar Deshpande also went for ₹7 crore and ₹6.5 crore to Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals respectively. Meanwhile, 13-year-old Bihar boy Vaibhav Suryavanshi also became the youngest cricketer to get an IPL contract. Rajasthan Royals snapped up Suryavanshi for ₹1.10 crore.

Earlier on Sunday, 25th Nov, Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer grabbed all the limelight for being the top three expensive Indian buys in IPL history. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) bought Pant for a whopping ₹27 crore while Shreyas went to Punjab Kings for ₹26.75 crore. The third expensive in IPL history was from defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders as they brought back Venkatesh for ₹23.75 crore.

The Unsold Fighters

Several well-known personalities were left unsold during the IPL auction 2025. The top player on that list is former Australia opener David Warner, who led Sunrisers Hyderabad to their first IPL championship in 2016. At the two-day auction, however, the 38-year-old left-hander, who had retired from international cricket, failed to find any buyers.

Not all well-known cricket players, however, were able to sign an IPL contract, including Warner. England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow, India's all-rounder Shardul Thakur and fast bowler Umesh Yadav, New Zealand's Kane Williamson and Darly Mitchell, and numerous others are also on the unsold list.

What happens to remaining purse of IPL team franchises?

The purse remaining, from the Rs 120 crore available to each team, also varies for all franchises. CSK and KKR have the joint lowest purse remaining of Rs 5 lakh each. At the other end, Royal Challengers Bengaluru have the most money still in their kitty with Rs 75 lakh.

This money will come in handy if a team needs to make a replacement at a later stage. If a player gets injured before the season begins, a team can bring in one of the unsold players into their squad. There is a small caveat though: the replaced player cannot be more expensive than the injured player. So, Prithvi Shaw, who went unsold at a base price of Rs 75 lakh, can only come in if the injured player's price was higher.

By virtue of this rule, the unsold players of IPL Auction 2025 still have a chance of playing the IPL 2025 season. So all hope is not lost for them.

Purse remaining of all IPL teams:

  • CSK: Rs 5 lakh
  • DC: Rs 20 lakh
  • GT: Rs 15 lakh
  • KKR: Rs 5 lakh
  • LSG: Rs 10 lakh
  • MI: Rs 20 lakh
  • PBKS: Rs 35 lakh
  • RR: Rs 30 lakh
  • RCB: Rs 75 lakh
  • SRH: Rs 20 lakh
