Are you a delhite, who is agitated with the capital's unresolved issue of pollution and wishes to reach out to the authorities whenever you come across a source pollutant? You will be glad to know that the Delhi government has made it quite simple for its citizens to raise their concerns through the Green Delhi Mobile App.

 

The concept of Green Delhi Mobile App was initiated on the recommendation of DDC Delhi for a unified grievance redressal to cater to air pollution related complaints in Delhi. Delhi’s Environment Minister formed a committee headed by a member of DDC Delhi to ensure the time-bound implementation of the same. The app features were benchmarked with global best practices and care was taken to address the shortcomings in a similar app by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The Green Delhi App was developed by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and National Informatics Centre (NIC). The app was launched by Hon’ble Chief Minister Sh. Arvind Kejriwal on 29 October, 2020. The iPhone friendly version of the app was launched in October 2022.

The Green Delhi app, allows citizens to report pollution-causing instances to the government. The purpose of the app is to redress pollution related complaints and allow citizens to alert Delhi government departments about violations of environmental norms. The app has 27 civic agencies of Delhi on a singular platform to ensure citizens’ complaints reach the concerned agency and get resolved in a time-bound manner. It also has The app has the feature of identifying location of the photograph taken. Strict timelines have been set for each type of complaint. The departments concerned will also have to post a picture after the complaint is addressed.

 

The Chief Minister said the Government wants to involve everyone in the fight against pollution as no big change can take place without the support of the people. Additionally, citizens can click pictures or make a video of pollution-causing activities, such as the burning of garbage, industrial pollution, dust and upload them on the application. The whole system is managed by a team of 70 ‘green’ marshals, designated at ‘green war room’, which has been setup at the Delhi Secretariat to monitor the status of complaints.

The Green Delhi app is designed with a simple interface and you can simply (Step 1) click on the plus sign to register your complain, Step 2: Record the video, audio or take a photo of your complaint, Step 3: Select what the complaint is from a list of drop down options, Step 4: Select the department of Delhi Government is should be sent to (e.g. which municipality, etc.) and Send it.

 

Talking about the success of the app, recent data showed that during Oct - Nov 2022, the city government resolved nearly 90 percent of the air pollution-related complaints it received through the Green Delhi app. More than 46,000 complaints have been captured by this app so far most of them have been resolved. The impact on improving the environment of Delhi using technology in this way is certainly worth emulating by other cities. It has been making useful contributions including helping identify the pollution hotspots of Delhi. The app enables every citizen of Delhi transform into a green warden for ensuring that Delhi can be kept clean and green, and free from pollution.
